Home Instructions After Sinus and Nasal Surgery

The first night after sinus or nasal surgery is the most difficult because you may have packing in your nose.  You may find sleeping elevated will be most comfortable-either with pillows or in a recliner.  Do not blow your nose, and if you must sneeze, open your mouth and sneeze out your mouth.  You may sniff gently through your nose once the packing has been removed.  This usually takes place the day after surgery.

For pain you may take Tylenol or the prescribed pain medication.  DO NOT take any aspirin products or anti-inflammatory such as Motrin, Ibuprofin, Aleve, Advil, Goody's, or BC Powder.  This will make bleeding more likely.  You should also take all the antibiotics if they have been prescribed for you.  Please let the office know if you have any signs of allergic reaction (itching, rash, or swelling).

You should not participate in any strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or deep bending for the next week unless you are cleared to do this sooner.  Be careful not to hit your nose or put excess pressure on your nose.  You may shower but try not to let the water be too hot because this may cause the nose to bleed.

You may have a little gauze dressing on the tip of your nose which you may change if it gets too soiled.  You may have some pinkish drainage and minor bleeding for 2-3 days.  You may also blow out bloody mucous and blood clots for the next 1-2 weeks.  Let the office know if you have heavy bleeding that soaks the gauze dressing every 10 minutes, any vision changes, or persistent temperature over 101 degrees.

When the packing is removed you will be given more instructions as to how to rinse and clean your nose.  You will also be advised in regards as to your allowed activity level.  If you have any other questions contact the office.
